Winneshiek County Community Foundation hands out nearly $100,000 in grants

The Winneshiek County Community Foundation has awarded $97,000 in grants to 24 area non-profit agencies and organizations.

The organization met recently to recognize all completed projects:
 
--Decorah Volunteer Fire Department -'Seeing through the smoke' - Purchase 3 thermal imaging cameras and 6 helmet cameras for entry for search & rescue -$6,000
 
--Luther College -  'Luther College Aquatic Center (Miller Challenge)' - Build a new indoor aquatic center with a competition pool for swimming & diving, and a shallow pool for swimming lessons & water aerobics - $5,000
 
--City of Spillville: Civic Improvement Association - 'Campground Enhancements' - Provide power hookup's to camping sites in Riverside Park - $6,000
 
--City of Jackson Junction - 'Outdoor Warning Siren' - Warning siren to benefit city of Jackson Junction, Jackson Heights Golf Course, and Turkey Valley School - $6,000
 
--City of Calmar: Calmar Public Library - 'Library Materials Storage Units' - Install a new double-sided shelving unit for books & purchase/set-up a new 3-Tier Rack for DVD's - $1,800
 
--Frankville Emergency Volunteer Association - 'Wildland/ Rescue & Bunker Gear Purchase' Obtain structural gear for a female fire fighter & wildlife/rescue gear for fighting wildland/brush fires - $4,367
 
--City of Fort Atkinson: Historic Preservation Commission - 'Fort Atkinson Walking Tour Brochure' - Print walking tour brochures to provide historical information to visitors at the fort - $1,200
 
--Northeast Iowa Community College Foundation - 'Winneshiek County Adult Literacy Support Fund' - Establish needs-based funding assistance to support county residents who seek GED & ESOL services - $3,000
 
--Winneshiek County Agricultural Association - 'Blacktopped Pathway Improvement Project  Blacktop area to west entrance of the show barn to make it more accessible for elderly & handicapped - $3,500
 
--St. Benedict School - 'Teaching With Technology' - Increase technological resources available to teachers & students, replace outdated machines, & increase staff development in the area of technology - $6,000
 
--South Winneshiek Community School District - 'Technology in the Classroom' - Purchase two smart boards & six document cameras for use in high school classrooms - $5,728
 
--Turkey Valley Community School District - 'Turkey Valley Preschool Playground' - Update pre-school playground structure & play space, & install Sof'Tile under the play structure to ensure a safe and appropriate fall surface - $6,000
 
--De Sales School: De Sales Child Care Center (ODCCC) - 'Child Care Center Expansion' - For supplies for a new addition to existing building consisting of two rooms, a bathroom, and an entrance space for coats/backpacks, etc. - $5,000
 
--Calmar, Festina, Spillville Catholic School - 'Technology for the Future' - Purchase 20 iPads - $4,663
 
--Winneshiek County Recycling - 'Recycling Collection Bins for Ridgeway, Castalia, Spillville, & Festina' - Place new recycling bins in these communities - $6,151
 
--Aase Haugen Homes, Inc. - 'Made in the Shade at AHH' - Construct a steel pergola directly in front of the wall of windows in the main dining room to create a scenic view while diffusing the direct sunlight - $4,125
 
--American Red Cross of the Tri-States - 'Save the Day' - As a Save the Day Partner, will provide immediate direct assistance to at least one local family affected by a home fire or other disaster - $1,010
 
--Northeast Iowa Food Bank - 'BackPack Program' - Provide weekly weekend food for hungry students in Winneshiek County - $5,000
 
--City of Fort Atkinson: Fort Atkinson Public Library - 'E-Reader & Audio Devices Plus Accessories' - Provide patrons opportunity to use a Nook Sony Reader or 1 of 3 Sandisk MP3 Players with training - $864
 
--City of Spillville: South Winn Area Community Group - '2012 Pyrotechnic Firing & Safety Equipment Improvement Project' - Obtain connecting cables to provide safe distances for fireworks firing crews - $2,560
 
--City of Calmar: Municipal Swimming Pool - 'ADA Access Compliancy for the City Swimming Pool' - Pool-side apparatus for disabled persons - $3,530
 
--Winneshiek County Conservation Board - '2012 Driftless Safari – Winneshiek County' - Purchase safari maps, guidebooks, bags, & crayons for Driftless Safari participants to use in exploring natural, cultural, & historical treasures in Winn. County - $4,000
 
--Turkey Valley Community School District - 'Turkey Valley Fitness Facility' - Purchase equipment for TV's new permanent fitness facility - $5,000
 
--Luther College: Women, Faith & Finance Initiative - 'Women, Faith, & Finance Educational Seminar Materials' - Purchase of resource materials for participants in an educational seminar' - $500
