There were two accidents over the weekend in the neighborhood of the Short Street construction project.
In the first accident at 5:15 p.m. Saturday 47-year-old Donald Backes of Decorah came to the Sanford Street and Mill Street intersection, tried to travel on South Mill Street, realized the street was closed, then backed up into a car driven by 21-year-old Hailey Spilde of Decorah. Backes was cited for failure to have insurance and was determined to be at fault for the accident.
At 1:15 p.m. Sunday 31-year-old Eli Johnson of Decorah was driving in the gravel alley near the CJ Lensing parking lot and Winneshiek Mutual Insurance when a minibike drove directly into the path of the car. The 14-year-old girl was ejected from the minibike and landed approximately 16 feet from the point of impact. However, she did not require hospitalization.
