The Decorah School District this fall will follow the lead of a growing number of Iowa school districts and will charge older students more money for school lunches and breakfasts.
Decorah School Superintendent Mike Haluska says "There's just such a difference (between a kindergartener and a high school senior." He recommended--and the Decorah School Board approved Monday night--a new schedule that charges kindergarten through 4th graders $1.15 for a breakfast and $1.90 for a lunch, while 5th through 8th graders will be charged $1.20 and $2.00, while hungry high schoolers will be charged $1.30 and $2.15. Adults will pay $1.70 for a breakfast and $2.70 for a lunch.
The school district last year charged $1.10 for a breakfast and $1.90 for a lunch. Haluska recommended raising the prices for 5th through 12th graders, saying "We weren't charging enough."
