Decorah has been chosen as one of the ten Iowa communities that will get an exhibit on the History of Blindness in Iowa.
Sponsored by the Iowa Department for the Blind, the exhibit will travel to public libraries across Iowa, with each library hosting the exhibit for one month and sponsoring a presentation on the topic.
The exhibit will be at the Decorah Public Library from August 6th through September 7th. On August 21st at 2:00 PM Meredith Ferguson from the Iowa Department for the Blind will give a presentation about the exhibit and the history project that produced the exhibit.
The exhibit consists of six banners, information about the project and oral history excerpts in text and audio formats.
The material highlights daily experiences and historical achievements through personal histories and photographs. Visitors will learn about part of Iowa's history from the voices of those who lived it.
The project's website, www.iowablindhistory.org, provides access to over 60 oral histories from blind Iowans, related historical documents and images, and more information about the lives of blind Iowans, and the people and events that impacted them.
