The NICC Calmar campus will be observing Abilities Awareness Week this Monday through Friday to promote awareness of persons with disabilities and to provide a forum for NICC students with disabilities to share their life and learning experiences.
The observance will begin with a program at 9:00 a.m. Monday that will include NICC President Dr. Liang Chee Wee reading the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Proclamation.
Monday afternoon a student panel will discuss how they have learned and lived with a disability.
Tuesday's events include an art exhibition featuring works from persons with disabilities.
Wednesday's events include a screening of the movie "Born on the Fourth of July" at 10 a.m., and a noon luncheon honoring servicemen and women, and veterans.
Throughout the week, breakout sessions will educate and share information about a variety of topics related to disabilities, including assistive technology, service animals, mental health, substance abuse, service-related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), dyslexia and community services that provide local assistance to persons with disabilities. During the week, a free will donation is available to contribute to the Asperger Retreat Fund.
