Because of redistricting, Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley of Waterloo has five new counties in his district--including Winneshiek County.
So Braley stopped in Decorah Wednesday morning as part of a three-day, six-city kickoff tour. He told a group of around three dozen people at Java John's that his new congressional district is double the size geographically of the existing district and has 400,000 new residents.
Braley told the group in Decorah that putting people back to work remains his top priority. He blasted the House Republican budget for "gutting the Medicare and Social Security safety net" and spoke of the need for targeted spending cuts and revenue increases. Said Braley of the Republicans, "Too many people think they have all the answers and the answer is always cutting taxes."
Braley has served three terms in Congress. He will face the winner of a Republic Party primary between Rod Blum of Dubuque and Ben Lange of Independence.
