The Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Advisory Group will have their first meeting at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Members of the Solid Waste/Recycling advisory group will serve as a sub-committee of the City Council's Betterment Committee. The advisory committee is studying curbside recycling and other possible changes to the city's garbage and recycling hauling system.
A study by decorahnews.com finds that curbside recycling is currently available in the city from private contractors--however, demand for the service is low.
Shimek Sanitation offers curbside recycling to residential customers, with collections every other week, but a company spokesperson has demand has been light for the service. Malcom Enterprises offers residential recycling as well, but company officials say most of the recycling pick-ups they do are cardboard recycling from local businesses. Hawkeye Recycling offers recycling in other communities but has not yet offering residential recycling in Decorah because of a lack of interest.
