The newest candidate for Winneshiek County Board is no stranger to county government. Former Sheriff Floyd Ashbacher on Friday said he plans to file nomination papers to run for District #2 on the county board.
Ashbacher served as Winneshiek County Sheriff until 2002, when he retired.
He will run in a county supervisor district that currently has no incumbent living within it. The 2010 U.S. Census resulted in changes in county supervisor district boundaries.
Ashbacher will run as a Republican. Decorah City Council member Rachel Vagts will run as a Democrat, while fellow Decorah City Council member John Franzen will run as an independent.
At this point there would be no need for a primary, despite there being three candidates, since none of the three have the same political affiliation. That means the election would be decided in November.
