The 322nd Engineering Battalion continues its deployment in Afghanistan.
Commander Troy King says:
"Right now the company is split among three locations. One of the locations is in the southern most portion of our area. The platoon is working on base security by erecting a new perimeter wall and building guard towers. Some of them are working on building new sleeping quarters buildings and are working on connecting showers and air conditioners for the infantry unit that lives there as well. Our other group is working at the most northern edge of our area, as far north in our area as possible. They are building another operation's center that will hold the offices for a battalion of 700-800 soldiers.
"For the most part, our living conditions are pretty good. On the base,
where a majority of the company is, we have a brand new dining facility that seats about 900 Soldiers at one time. We have plenty of phones and
computers. The outlying bases do not have as many benefits. All of us are sleeping in air conditioned tents. Most of the tents have been modified into 8x8 living spaces and provide each Soldier some privacy. Last week the temperature was around 115 degrees and it has been as high as 138F with the heat index, but this week it is around 105-110. There is very little humidity here. In fact there are very few days that we even see a cloud in the sky.
"Our original mission of general construction and base improvement has not changed. Right now we are still improving a lot of small bases by making them larger, better protected, and more comfortable for other Soldiers to live in.
"Our timeline is somewhat hard to predict. We know that our work should slow down some in December and we are still on schedule for a return to the states some-time in early January."
