Over 25 firefighters representing five different Northeast Iowa fire departments now have a better idea of how to rescue someone from a grain bin, thanks to a program put on by NICC Calmar.
Grain bin fatalities have increased in recent years. Rescue training is now becoming a priority for rural fire departments throughout Northeast Iowa.
The firefighters were taught the main causes of engulfment, as well as how to rescue a victim from a partial or full entrapment. A grain engulfment simulator and rescue tube was brought to NICC Calmar to provide hands-on training.
NICC officials say such training can make a dramatic difference in the event of an actual grain bin engulfment emergency.
