A recently-arrived resident of Decorah has been killed in a hit and run accident near Ashland, Wisconsin.

The Bayfield County, Wisconsin, Sheriff's Department says in a press release that the body of 23-year-old Bjorn Norgaard was found by a snowmobiler early Sunday morning. Investigators believe Norgaard was cross country skiing on a trail near Ashland after taking part in the annual Book Across the Bay race, which took place Saturday. The race finished in Washburn, Wisconsin. Norgaard told others he planned to ski back to Ashland via the race route, according to the sheriff's department.

On Sunday afternoon, a 16-year-old Ashland resident contacted the sheriff's department and told deputies he might have been the driver of the vehicle that apparently struck Norgaard. The sheriff's department says the man has been cooperating with the investigation. The case is being reviewed for possible charges.

Norgaard had recently moved to Decorah after living in the Northfield, Minnesota area.
