January was cold and dry in Decorah

January in Decorah was cold and snowy.  That's the word from Decorah weather observer Richard Bernatz.

He says temperatures averaged 14.4 degrees in Decorah in January.  That's 1.6 degrees lower than the January average of 16 degrees.  Temperatures ranged from 36 degrees on January 1st to 23 degrees below zero on January 23rd.

Decorah recorded 11 inches of snow in January.  That's two inches more than average.  However, the snow was drier than average--just 0.86 inches of precipitation when melted, or 0.17 inches less than average.
