A key House committee has approved a plan crafted by State Representative John Beard of Decorah to increase the production and sales of locally grown foods.
"Selling and producing locally grown food is a win-win for our entire community. Farmers have new markets for their crops, more money stays in our local economy, and our environment is cleaner because of reduced transportation costs," said Beard.
Senate File 404, which was approved the House Agriculture Committee on Wednesday, directs the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University to develop a local farm and food plan with short-term and long-term recommendations for increasing local food production and sales.
"In addition to expanding organic agriculture, locally grown food can give our area's economy a boost and help revitalize main streets across Iowa," added Beard.
The bill now goes to the House floor for consideration.
