Recent Luther grad among Haiti earthquake victims

The earthquake in Haiti has apparently taken the life of a Luther College graduate.

Benjamin Larson, a 2006 Luther graduate, had been in Haiti working on various January term projects through Wartburg Seminary of Dubuque. He was accompanied by his wife, Renee Splichal Larson, and cousin, Jonathan Larson. All three were in the same building when the earthquake struck, but Renee and Jonathan were able to escape. While Benjamin's body has not yet been found, it is believed he was killed in the earthquake.

Benjamin is the son of April Ulring Larson and Judd Larson and the nephew of Decorah residents Jim and Nancy Ulring.

A statement issued Thursday by Luther College said: "The Luther community extends its prayers and sympathy to Renee, the extended Ulring and Larson families, the Wartburg Seminary community, and all who mourn the loss of Ben, one who burned brightly with passion, service, joy, and creativity given in praise to God and service to others."
