Fire does major damage to Freeport house

Fire did significant damage to a house at 1297 258th Street in Decorah on Wednesday. Firefighters were called out at 9:05 a.m. to the home of Philip and Angie Headington. When they arrive, heavy fire was seen coming from a second story window and also from the basement area.

Firefighters determined no occupants were in the home. They fought the fire from the inside of the house, but then, due to deteriorating conditions, fought it from the exterior.

Decorah firefighters were on the scene for a total of six hours. The amount of damage to the home has not yet been computed. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental.

The Decorah Fire Department was assisted by the Waukon Fire Department, Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance, Winneshiek County Road Department, REC and the Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
