Vaccinations have begun of residents and staff members at Decorah nursing homes

Coronavirus vaccinations began Friday for residents and staff members at Aase Haugen Home and Wellington Place in Decorah.

The two long-term care facilities have partnered with Walgreen's, which administered the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations.

"This is our first step on the journey to herd immunity," said Aase Haugen Administrator Orson Bauder.  He added that staff members and residents will continue to wear masks, socially distance and screen upon entrance to the facility. Also, there are no changes in visiting restrictions at this time, although floral deliveries and deliveries of purchased food and clothing dropped off by families are accepted.

At Wellington Place, Administrator Scott Marnin said, "After nine long months and a lot of trials and tribulations, Wellington Place has finally received the much-anticipated Pfizer vaccine for their residents and staff members."  Friday's vaccination was the first of the two doses needed for immunization.  A second dose will be given on Thursday, January 21st, to complete the process.  Said Marnin, "Our front-line employees rose to the occasion and ran into the fire. The character of our staff has been nothing short of amazing throughout this very challenging year."
