Winneshiek Medical Center and Mayo Clinic Health System announce new Chief Medical Officer

Winneshiek Medical Center and Mayo Clinic Health System leaders today announced that Thomas Marquardt, D.P.M., has been appointed to serve as the next Chief Medical Officer of Winneshiek Medical Center.

Dr. Marquardt has been serving in the interim chief medical officer role since September of 2019 after the previous chief medical officer, Robert Flinchbaugh, D.O., returned to his medical practice.  

Winneshiek Medical Center chief administrative officer Lisa Radtke  says, "Working with Dr. Marquardt over the past year has been a true joy.  His years of experience as a surgeon in our community provide him the unique understanding of local health care needs as well as the challenges facing rural health care today.  He displays passion and commitment for excellence in leadership and has vision and excitement for Winneshiek Medical Center's future.  Dr. Marquardt will be an excellent leader for years to come."

A graduate of Luther College, Dr. Marquardt received his podiatric medical degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, a program within the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago. He was in private practice for nine years in the Milwaukee area, working closely with and training residents at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, and joined Mayo Clinic Health System in 2006. In addition to his medical and surgical practice, he has served Decorah Clinic Physicians as Vice President for Practice and Professional Development for approximately 10 years and as Specialty Medical Director since 2015.

Dr. Marquardt says, "Winneshiek Medical Center is truly a special place and I look forward to formally expanding my role in leadership as Chief Medical Officer.  As is Mayo Clinic's model, I will continue providing podiatric surgical care while working with the members of the leadership team, the Board of Trustees and Mayo Clinic Health System to carry out our strategic direction.  Over the past year, our Winneshiek Medical Center family has shown true grit and determination as we faced, and continue to face, the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.  I share in everyone's hope that the pandemic will begin to weaken and am thankful for the opportunity to play a role in emerging from the effects of COVID-19 as a strong health care system well equipped to meet the needs of our patients and the region."
