"Decorah Song" by Doug Freeman

(First in a series of articles about improvements at the Decorah Fish Hatchery)

There are two new additions to the grounds of the Decorah Fish Hatchery--two statues created by sculptor Doug Freeman.  Freeman's previous work included creating a sculpture for the Trout Run Trail, which is installed along the Upper Iowa River.

Freeman visited Decorah and the hatchery grounds numerous times in the past couple of years, coming up with design models for two sculptures in the fall of last year.   After the designs were approved, the sculptures were completed in September of this year.  Then on November 20th, a boom truck lifted the sculptures and placed them onto the bases.

Freeman named the female figure "Decorah Song." The playful figures of the wildcat, young girl, and the umbrella are named "Dream Travelers."

Friends of the Decorah Hatchery member Peggy Beatty says, "As people visit the sculptures, they should walk around and enjoy the variety of backgrounds as well as the play of the sunlight that changes throughout the day."
