(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Janelle Pavlovec of Decorah):
"57 persons signed a petition to have a special election of the (Decorah City Council) Ward 5 representative, instead of accepting the person, Steve Zittergruen, that the City Council appointed to fill out the vacancy left by the resignation of Johanna Bergan when she moved out of the ward. The appointee is on the city council until the results will be known of the Tuesday, December 8th, election. (By the way, this election will cost approximately $1,000)
I have been impressed with Zittergruen's efforts to attend not just city council meetings, but also to sit in on city commission and committee meetings in order to learn the various pieces of the city government puzzle. He asks questions about background and issues that are not easily clear. Not all newly-elected people do this before they start to vote on agenda items."
