City of Decorah's residential tax abatement program adds $5.1 million in property valuations in 2020

The City of Decorah in 2020 again offered property tax incentives to people building new houses or doing major remodels of existing houses.  City officials have released figures which puts the total increase in property valuations because of the incentives at $5,104,860 for 2020.

That figure is actually lower than four out of the five previous years the tax incentive program has been in effect, but it still brings the total value of all construction which qualified for the tax incentives to $39.5 million.

This year, tax incentives were awarded to 13 new construction projects of either single family homes or multi-family condos.  Another six projects which significantly remodeled existing homes also qualified for the program.

The Decorah City Council has agreed to continue the program through 2021.  There will be some changes in the program next year, mostly tied to building inspections and code compliance matters.
