On a 4-3 vote Monday night, the Decorah City Council picked East Main street and not Pole Line Road as the next major road construction project for the city to tackle.
The vote came after City Engineer Jeremy Bril told council members he'd favor the Main Street Project over the pole Line Road project. He did recommend, however, that the street project include the replacement of 4-inch water mains underneath the street, water mains he said were "undersized" and over 100 years old. That would raise the estimate price by $90,000 per block, so it might not be possible to do the full five blocks of East Main Street because of the budget.
City Street Committee Chair Ross Hadley said he favors the East Main Street project as well, in part because it would give the city more time to study what needs to be done on Pole Line Road.
However, city council members Randy Schissel, Steve Luse and Andy Carlson favored the Pole Line Road project, so the final vote was 4-3.
