The special election to fill the 5th Ward position on the Decorah City Council will be held Tuesday, December 8th. Two candidates have filed nomination papers to be candidates on the ballot--Steve Zittergruen and Tim Felton.
Zittergruen spent his childhood in Monona and has lived in Decorah for three years after living in other communities in Wisconsin and Iowa. Felton is a retired Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputy who lives on Locust Road.
The two previously submitted applications to the Decorah City Council to fill the seat vacated by Johanna Bergan, who moved out of the ward. The city council selected Zittergruen by a 4-2 vote. Subsequently, petitions with the required number of signatures were submitted to the County Auditor to have the issue settled through a special election.
The December 8th polling site will be the Winneshiek County Courthouse, which will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. that day. Absentee balloting at the Auditor's Office during normal business hours or through the mail will start as soon as ballots are ready.
