Lung cancer is the leading cause of preventable deaths, says Helping Services for Northeast Iowa staff member Tessa Willie. Willie met Monday with Winneshiek County Supervisors, who approved a resolution recognizing the week of November 15th as Tobacco Awareness Week in Winneshiek County.
Willie told supervisors there's a new emphasis on getting 13-year-olds to 17-year-olds to avoid cigarette smoking. The "My Life, My Quit" program (https://ia.mylifemyquit.org/index) has been set up to handle phone calls from teenagers with questions about the effects of smoking. "My Life, My Quit" can be reached at 855.891.9989.
The "Great American Smokeout" will be held Monday, November 16th, to encourage people to stop smoking.
