Election Day in Winneshiek County went smoothly

Posted: Wed, Nov 4, 2020 12:04 PM

Winneshiek County Auditor Ben Steines says the local election process "ran smoothly, efficiently, safely, and with integrity."  Steines is thanking the precinct workers and the staff of the County Auditor's Office.  Says Steines, "Elections involve a lot of long days, procedural details, and stress; but they performed admirably."

As of the end of the night on Election Day, there were 12,143 total votes cast, but 191 absentee ballots are still out.  If they are returned to the Auditor's Office by noon on Monday with a postmark or USPS barcode scan to prove they were mailed no later than Monday, November 2nd, Steines says they will be added to the vote totals.

The canvass of the election by the Board of Supervisors will take place at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 10th, in the Courthouse Annex.

The state-required post-election audit, where the votes for President in one randomly-drawn precinct are counted by hand and compared to the voting machine totals from Election Day, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 6th at the Auditor's Office.

Election questions can be directed to the Auditor's Office at (563) 382-5085 or auditor@co.winneshiek.ia.us.
