Letter to the Editor: My yard signs interject a little bit of humor

Posted: Mon, Nov 2, 2020 8:27 AM

(The following Letter to the Editor has been sent in by Todd Neal of Decorah):

"I had no intention of ever again publicly addressing my signs, having done so over a year ago. However, the issue is still ruffling feathers enough to have my name published along with my wife's in the paper again. Because there was a broken link to my previous comments, I am left with little choice but to respond again (Editor's note: the broken link was fixed as soon as we heard about it.  Visit the amended story at: http://www.decorahnews.com/news-stories/2020/10/26616.html.)

I am a 5th generation Iowan, with fierce independence and well over a hundred years of farming heritage. Most people would say that I am the typical Iowa boy, a lifelong wrestler, coach, parent, and teacher. I'm Iowa nice, unless you met me on a wrestling mat. This president undermines everything I've been taught to believe in and stand up for. He is the antithesis of Iowa values. I have a hard time wrapping my head around so-called patriots complaining about my constitutional right to free expression.

Our democracy is under assault by the asshat in the oval office (no surprise, he has a history of assault). My signs are the very least of what I can do to stand up for the nation I love and that my father fought and almost died for (see the hopefully fixed link).

There is a reason, we are a purple state. Iowans are tough and smart. We love land and people. We think for ourselves and care for others. This election isn't about blue and red, my tribe or yours, it's about right and wrong.

I harbor no grand illusions that my signs are changing any minds. Sadly the country is too painfully divided. My signs express my resistance and interject a little bit of humor toward the manbaby in chief. His crippling, cancerous culture of lies, conspiracy theories and ignorance have cost Iowa & American lives."
