Vacancy on the Decorah City Council will be filled Monday night

Who will be the next member of the Decorah City Council?  That question should be answered Monday night.

The Decorah City Council will elect one of two applicants to fill the 5th Ward vacancy created by the resignation of Johanna Bergan, who moved out of the ward.

There are two candidates who applied for the seat--Tim Felton and
Steve Zittergruen.  Monday evening at 5:45 p.m., the remaining six members of the Decorah City Council will hear from each candidate as to their qualifications.  A vote by written ballot will then be taken and tabulated.  A majority of the remaining six city council members must approve the candidate--the Mayor cannot vote to break a tie.  Votes will be taken until there is a majority favoring one candidate.

The new city council member will be sworn in and will take the 5th Ward seat immediately after being selected by the city council.  The new city council member will serve until the next city election in November of 2021.
