Decorah Superintendent Mark Lane sent an email to families Tuesday morning in regards to some rumors going around about COVID-19 numbers in the schools.
Lane stated, "It has come to my attention that people are speculating about the number of students currently quarantining for reasons related to COVID-19. I have heard rumors such as, 'they sent 60 students home today from the high school,' and 'there are over 160 students quarantining right now.' Neither of these statements are true."
The table below reflects the number of students and staff in quarantine or isolation in the Decorah School District.
In an effort clear up any confusion, Lane continued, "Those who have been reviewing our data when I share it each Friday, will notice an increase in the total number of individuals isolating or quarantining. This is reflective of individuals identified through contact tracing Friday, and then in another case Monday." While the district communicated with a number of students and families about the need to quarantine, it is not the number that speculated on social media.
Next, Lane addressed a press release from Siouxland District Health Department in Sioux City, Iowa being shared on social media. The release indicates changes in Iowa Public Health Department COVID-19 Quarantine Guidance. Lane said, "A press release from Siouxland District Health is not the same as an official communication from the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Department of Education, or Governor Reynolds. We will not be changing our practice based on a press release from local public health in western Iowa."
Until quarantine/isolation guidelines have officially changed through the Iowa Department of Public Health or the Iowa Department of Education, Decorah schools will continue to follow the policy already in operation from these two organizations. Lane suggested changes may come as early as today when Governor Reynolds holds her press conference.
If and when guidance changes, the district will work with Winneshiek County Public Health to understand the guidance and adjust their approach.
Lane said, "I know these are stressful times. I know being told to quarantine when you feel fine, and you have been diligently wearing a face mask is frustrating. My hope is people can remain calm in the face of challenging or contradictory information and treat individuals with respect."
