New survey says Decorah is the 21st safest small town in Iowa

A new study from www.advisorsmith.com on the "Safest Cities in Iowa" declares that Decorah is the #21 safest small city in Iowa.

The study analyzed violent and property crimes from 79 small town, as well as 10 large cities and 30 mid-sized cities in Iowa.  Crime scores were calculated for each city and the cities were ranked to find the safest places in Iowa.

Decorah had a total crime score of 19.2, which was well below the average of 37 for small towns with under 10,000 residents.  Decorah's violent crime rate was 2.4 per 1,000 residents, compared with an average of 6.8 per 1,000 across all small towns. The city's property crime rate was 12.8 per 1,000 residents. Statewide, the average property crime rate in small towns was 12.5 per 1,000.

The safest small town in Iowa was Eldridge, a small city of about 7,000 residents located to the north of Davenport and a part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area.  The average crime score in Iowa's small towns was 37, with a range from 2 in the safest cities to as high as 107.
