The United States has now passed a milestone not all medical experts thought it would cross--more than 200,000 deaths from COVID-19.
Reporting among the various news media and health agencies varies, but almost all say the death toll is now about 200,000. Calculations vary from the 200,100 deaths cited by the NY Times to the 201,258 deaths cited by NBC News.
1,285 Iowa residents have died from the coronavirus, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. In NE Iowa, six deaths have been reported in both Howard County and in Allamakee County. There have been five deaths in Winneshiek County, three deaths in Clayton County and two deaths in Fayette County. Only Chickasaw County has escaped having a death attributed to COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Winneshiek County has surpassed its own milestone, with the number of county residents having tested positive for COVID-19 now surpassing the 300 mark at 304 cases. Allamakee County has had 250 cases; Clayton County has had 235 cases; Chickasaw County has had 225 cases and Fayette County has had 200 cases. Only Howard County is below 200 cases, with a total of 182. The combined number of COVID-19 cases in NE Iowa is just four cases short of 1,400, at 1,396.
