In a sign that the COVID-19 epidemic is not slowing down in NE Iowa, Winneshiek County is now nearing the 300 mark for total COVID-19 cases. The Iowa Department of Public Health says there have been 294 COVID-19 cases in the county since records started being kept in March.
It took from mid-March to early August for Winneshiek County to record a total of 100 COVID cases. Then the county broke the 200 mark in late August. Now it seems like it will break the 300 mark less than one month later.
Of the 294 Winneshiek County residents who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, five have died and 215 have recovered, meaning 74 are still in isolation, trying to recover from the disease.
In the rest of Northeast Iowa, Allamakee County has had 243 cases; Clayton County has had 231 cases; Fayette County has had 187 cases; Chickasaw County has had 207 cases and Howard County has had 182 cases. That means there have been 1,344 cases in the six counties in Northeast Iowa--an average of 224 cases per county. Winneshiek County has the highest number of cases--294--but Howard County has had the highest rate of COVID-19 cases, amounting to almost 2,000 cases per 100,000 population.
