Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a Publisher's Clearing House scam

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office says a recent Publishers Clearing House scam has swindled thousands of dollars from some area residents.
The scam starts with a call or letter saying you've won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. One Winneshiek County citizen received the scam call and reported they told her she won a new Mercedes Benz and $7,500 a month for life.
Every single time the scammers explain there is a small fee or outstanding government bill due before claiming the prize. The scammers request money or bank information to claim the prize.
If "Publishers Clearing House" ever calls you to say you've won anything – This is a scam! Publishers Clearing House DOES NOT call winners. Please remember to NEVER give out any personal information or send any money to these scammers.
