The Charles City School District still could leave the Northeast Iowa Conference and start its own new conference.
Charles City Superintendent Mike Fisher told the Des Moines Register that the topic is still being explored by a task force which is expected to make an official recommendation to the school board in a couple of months.
This summer, Waverly-Shell Rock fans taunted a player on the Charles City baseball team who is Black, using several racial references. That led Charles City Schools to form a task force of students, coaches, staff members, principals and alumni.
The task force could bring its formal recommendation to the school board before the end of the year. The Charles City School Board will then decide whether the Comets will leave the NEIC within the next two years.
Fisher told the Des Moines Register he has contacted at least 10 schools about joining a new athletic conference--and he's received nearly unanimous support and plenty of interest.
