Part 2: What will the new Decorah Hy-Vee look like?

(Last year decorahnews.com was given a tour of the Hy-Vee in Garner, Iowa, which is just a little larger than the new Decorah Hy-Vee will be.  The Decorah Hy-Vee opens Tuesday morning, so we're updating and re-posting our story from last year):

There are differences between Hy-Vee grocery stores, depending upon what community they're situated in.  For instance, the Hy-Vee store in Garner has cut flowers.  Garner Hy-Vee store director Amber Hawks says in the case of her store, baked goods are made at another Hy-Vee 20 miles away and brought to Garner on a daily basis.  Since Decorah is 65 miles from the nearest Hy-Vee, it will offer only packaged bakery items.

Hy-Vee officials in West Des Moines say the Decorah Hy-Vee store "will offer a full selection of grocery items; a Wall of Values; a full-service meat department; a floral department with prearranged offerings; a Hy-Vee Market Grille; an adjacent wine and spirits section; an in-store Starbucks; Hy-Vee Aisles Online grocery services; and self-checkout lanes."

Garner Hy-Vee manager Amber Hawks told decorahnews.com the "Wall of Values" at her store is popular.  It includes Hy-Vee's own products, many under the "That's Smart" label, and special prices on other products.  There also are red arrows throughout the store which highlight lower prices.

If savings are important to you—and research shows most consumers fall into this category—Hy-Vee has a number of customer programs designed to help save money.  Many Hy-Vees include gas pumps.  The Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Program allows customers to use their grocery purchases to earn discounts on the gasoline they purchase.  The Decorah Hy-Vee will not include gas pumps, but Hy-Vee also has an agreement with Casey's which allows Hy-Vee customers to earn gas discounts at Casey's stations, so Decorah customers would qualify for Casey's gas discounts.

Fuel discounts won't be the only advantage--Hy-Vee's Perks program, which operates using the same card, awards special coupons and prizes to customers.

Some of the features of the Decorah Hy-Vee store were being determined just before the opening, so people can tour the new facility any time after 6:00 Tuesday morning.  There will also be a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 Tuesday morning.
