Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputies respond to four traffic accidents over the Labor Day weekend

Winneshiek County Sheriff's Deputies were busy over the holiday weekend.

Just before 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, they were called to Calmar, where 85-year-old Violet Krivacek of Fort Atkinson was traveling south on Maryville Street and struck an 83-year-old Calmar woman who was crossing the street. The pedestrian was taken by ambulance and later transported by helicopter to Gundersen in La Crosse.  The accident remains under investigation.

Sunday morning around 8:10 a.m., 26-year-old Edgar Torres Munoz of Waukon lost control of his vehicle while northbound on Middle Calmar Road.   He left the roadway and rolled into the ditch. His vehicle had $12,500 in damages.  Torres Munoz was cited for failure to maintain control and no valid driver's license.

At 4:00 p.m. Sunday, 27-year-old Angela Martinez of Decorah was westbound on Pole Line Road and swerved to miss an animal in the road. Martinez entered the north ditch and struck the top of a box culvert which caused the vehicle to rollover onto its top. Martinez and her four children were able to get out of the vehicle.  No ambulance transport was needed.  Martinez was cited for no valid driver's license and failure to provide proof of insurance.  Her van had $8,000 in damages.

Finally, just before 8:00 a.m. Monday morning, 17-year-old Jayden Weiss of Fort Atkinson was southbound on County Road W14 when the car's tires dropped off the pavement onto the shoulder. Weiss re-entered the roadway but lost control and went across the roadway, went into the ditch and rolled over, landing on the wheels. No ambulance was needed. There was $8,500 in damages to her vehicle.  The accident remains under investigation, with charges pending.
