Will the Luther College campus be added to the National Register of Historic Places?

The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission will meet Tuesday afternoon for comment on the nomination of the Luther College campus to the National Register of Historic Places

The public is invited to attend a 2:00 p.m. Tuesday meeting at the Whalen Cabin picnic shelter on the National Register of Historic Places nomination of the Luther College campus.  The meeting will be held outdoors, with mandated social distancing.

The project began in late 2017 as a Decorah Historic Preservation Commission joint initiative with Luther College.  It led to the hiring of Jan Olive Full as a professional consultant and research in 2018 by more than 20 people.  The nomination was filed with the State Historic Preservation Office this spring.  Following Tuesday's public hearing, the nomination will be forwarded to the state, which will forward it to the federal government's Department of Interior for a final decision.

"We're now quite confident that the nomination will move smoothly through the state and national evaluations and that the campus will be listed on the National Register by the end of 2020," says Historic Preservation Commission chair Mark Z. Muggli.
