The Luther College Woman's Club has cancelled its monthly meetings for the rest of the year in accordance with the college's directives related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We feel it would be unwise to ask our members to attend meetings considering the health risks posed by COVID-19 and the challenges of physical distancing and masking," says Woman's Club President Bette Eells.
In addition to its monthly meetings, the LCWC provides support for special projects at the college and awards $6,000 in student scholarships each year. (To date, the LCWC has given more than $325,000 to the college.) Funds to support these initiatives are typically raised through the club's treat project (whereby club members bake treats for Luther students) and Christmas treat bags distributed to students during the "Christmas at Luther" season. However, COVID-19 has forced the temporary suspension of this service.
"Given the pandemic, we are not providing treats to Luther students this fall," says Eells. "In light of all this, the LCWC board is requesting all club members pay dues of $35 for the 2020-21 year only. This will enable us to meet our scholarship obligations for the upcoming year." Dues may be mailed to Muriel Lensch, LCWC treasurer, at 2077 Town Line Road, Decorah, Iowa, 52101.
The LCWC will review the possibility of resuming meetings in 2021 at a later date.
