(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Doug Bryce of Decorah):
"I moved here to Decorah nearly 13 years ago and have enjoyed this wonderful town. Almost every time I tell other people about our town, I will describe our diversity, but I will always end by saying 'that everybody takes care of everybody and that's why we have such a strong town.'
Though there are a diversity of worldviews and large differences in life perspectives, the beauty of Decorah is not found in its streams, river, bike trails or bluffs, it is found in the fact that we have generally done a good job caring for each other despite the differences in opinions we may have.
I have numerous relationships or acquaintances with people who see life differently than I do; and yet both they and I are sensitive to each other. We may argue and debate ideas, but we understand it is the idea and not the person we are challenging.
I want to strongly encourage and even challenge all of us in this time, yes you may debate the validity of an idea freely, but make sure when you are done challenging the idea, that you affirm the person(s) you may have been dealing with.
Then put away the challenge to the ideas, grab a sandwich or coffee with a person who sees different than you and mutually see the humanity in each other.
We cannot allow ourselves to be split so much that we stop showing concern and sensitivity to someone else. So go out of your way to be polite, thoughtful, courteous, and generous, put away the argument for a while and love the person in front of you."
