Letter to the Editor: To those who are stealing Shirley Vermace lawn signs, you owe Julie Askelson an apology

(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Marilyn Rue of Decorah):

To those who are stealing Shirley Vermace lawn signs, you owe (her opponent) Julie Askelson an apology. This was probably not your intent, but you have tarnished her campaign and have given the impression, very publicly, that this is a campaign that cannot win on its own merits.

If you are juveniles, let me say that despite what you see on the national level, politics is about debate and fair exchange of ideas, not dirty tricks.

If you are adults, trespassing and theft of personal property from several households constitutes a misdemeanor. I am sure Julie does not want her campaign to be associated with illegal activity.

Returning the lawn signs would be preferred, but the least you could do would be to show some respect for your candidate and her reputation."
