In the five previous months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Winneshiek County, there have been a total of 85 new confirmed cases.  Through Friday, August 21st--a period of three weeks in August--there have been 85 confirmed cases this month.  That places the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in Winneshiek County at 170, which means half of all COVID-19 cases in the county have come since August 3rd.

45 of those confirmed cases came on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week.

The totals from the Iowa Department of Public Health have led National Geographic to declare that Winneshiek County is one of Iowa's "red counties," a designation given to the counties nationwide with the highest increases in COVID-19 cases.

Winneshiek County has some company in that designation, with both Howard County and Clayton County registering sharp increases in COVID-19 cases last week as week.
