(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Kristen Frank of Decorah):
"The mask mandate is not only an education-forward policy, but also demonstrates the decisive leadership of the mayor and city council. COVID-19 can cause serious complications for some people, whether they are hospitalized or not. Future effects are unknown at this time. Wearing a mask may protect the wearer, and it is a way to demonstrate care and concern for others. If you already wear a mask out in public, when in close proximity of others, thank you. You already understand the importance of doing so. The ordinance is not directed at you. But some people need to be educated and reminded. Private businesses can refuse service for no shirt or no shoes, and now, no mask. Business owners would rather not cut your hair or sell you a widget if you don't wear a mask--they need to protect their jobs, employees, customers, and family members. The police may only be involved if you refuse to wear a mask, and cause a ruckus. How long does someone spend inside a business anyway? Use your time to put on a mask for a few minutes rather than waste your time complaining about it.
Some people only do something which is right for them, with no consideration for others. That is the definition of being selfish. By living in Decorah, we share a sense of community. Let's not take chances to also share the virus. Don't cause a ruckus, just swallow your pride, show pride in Decorah, and wear a mask for a few minutes."
