Over 1,000 breweries in the United States and 21 foreign countries have now joined a campaign to support non-profit organizations promoting diversity. Decorah's Pulpit Rock Brewing Company is one of those breweries.
The "Black is Beautiful" initiative is described as, "an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily. Our mission is to bridge the gap that's been around for ages and provide a platform to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone of any color."
Pulpit Rock Brewing Company Manager Scott Nading says proceeds from the sale of its 'Black is Beautiful' beer will be donated to the Iowa ACLU Foundation. The beer is being sold for $7 per 16-ounce can, with no purchase limits. Pulpit Rock's version is a Coconut Milk Stout.
The Black is Beautiful beer initiative was started by the co-owner of San Antonio brewery "Weathered Souls," Marcus Baskerville, who said he started the campaign because he has personally dealt with what he considered abuse of power by the police. "I contemplate how the country can move forward, how we as the people can create change and what it will take for everyone to move forward with a common respect for one another. For us, we feel that this is our contribution to a step," he told the Milwaukee Journal.
