Erbie and Gerry Steffens were 4-H club leaders who played active roles in those volunteer positions long after their children graduated. They established a scholarship to be awarded to someone who is pursuing a career in agriculture.
Makayla Hageman, who was raised on a family farm near Ossian, is this year's recipient of the scholarship.
Makayla has been a 4-H member for nine years, currently serving as president of the Co-Champions 4-H Club. She received her Iowa FFA Degree and was named the 2019 Winneshiek County Fair Queen. On receiving the scholarship, she said, "Being a longtime member of both 4-H and FFA, I understand the importance of continuing to promote our family farms and extra-curricular activities that support agriculture. I want to be a resource for farmers, promote the awareness of the industry and how it truly affects all of us."
She plans to attend Iowa State University to major in Agricultural Business, with hopes of working in Ag Finance, sales or technology.
