The Charles City School District has issued a statement which makes it clear they're not satisfied with Waverly-Shell Rock School District's investigation into racist chants at a recent baseball game.
On Tuesday, Waverly-Shell Rock Schools issued a statement which said in part, "Because all individuals involved are students, federal and state law prohibit the District from releasing specific findings and actions relating to this matter, but our District is taking appropriate measures in response to this incident."
On Wednesday, Charles City Schools issued its own statement in reply. It said in part that the Waverly statement "lacked the clarity we desire."
The statement did not mention Waverly-Shell Rock by name, but said it expected "the involved school district" would develop "clear, measurable action steps to resolve racism and sportsmanship issues."
The Charles City School District's statement said their leaders met with the executive directors of the IHSAA and the IGHSAU to discuss how to make statewide changes, including active bystander training, increased education for all fans, postseason accountability for poor sportsmanship, and obligations to address fan behavior.
Said the statement, "We are eager to see a clear action plan on the part of the involved school district to accept responsibility and ensure students can be kept safe from bigoted and inappropriate behaviors."
