When the Winneshiek Energy District was formed in 2010, it was the only such kind of its organization in Iowa. Part of WED's mission at the time was to help others understand the concept of an energy district and to help those counties who wanted to start their own energy district.
Currently, additional energy districts are operational in Clayton, Howard, Dubuque, Johnson, and Delaware counties and are being formed in Allamakee, Jackson, and Polk counties. Other counties continue to inquire about the steps needed to form an energy district.
Because of the growth in energy districts, supporters of the concept have formed "Clean Energy Districts of Iowa." The purpose of the new organization is "to enable and support leadership and the general public in implementing and accelerating the locally-owned, clean, efficient and fair energy transition."
Winneshiek Energy District representatives say "it is gratifying and exciting to see an idea that originated right here…gain traction."
