Decorah firefighters were called to 501 North Street around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were notified of smoke coming from under a door in the apartment building.  Occupants of the building had been alerted to the problem by smoke detectors and were standing outside when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters found a water heater that malfunctioned, resulting in a small fire.  The power was shut off to the water heater and the apartment was ventilated.

No injuries were reported and the occupants were eventually able to return to their apartments.

The Decorah Fire Department was assisted by the Decorah Police Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance Service, Black Hills Energy and Alliant Energy.
