Decorah Library's "Take-and-Make Monday" program provides hands on educational activities for kids and families

Decorah Public Library Children's and Young Adult Librarian Rachael Button has started a new program aimed at young readers and their families called "Take-and-Make Monday."

Button said, "One of the things I miss the most with doing distance programs is the interaction with families. It's been really fun to provide something for families to do and hear that they've enjoyed it."

With this new weekly program, families can sign-up to pick up an activity bag from the library.  Over the past month, these activities have ranged from origami to DIY bubble wands to watercolors.  Each "Take-and-Make" bag includes materials and instructions to do a small project at home.

Button continued, "I'd been hearing from parents and educators in the area and they were looking for ways to reduce screen time, and this is one way the library can help. My background is an educator and facilitator, and this is a great way to use those skills even during COVID-19."

Currently, there are three Mondays with a variety of projects scheduled for the "Take-and-Make" program. July 20th will have kids and families practicing literacy using Play-Doh. July 27th and August 3rd include Rainbow Scratch Art and Jan Brett Alphabet Flags themes, respectively.

Preregistration is required, and families are encouraged to sign up early as supplies are limited.  To sign up, visit the Decorah Library website, and then click on "Take-and-Make Monday" under "Upcoming Events."

On the scheduled Monday, bags can be picked up curbside near the ground floor book drop of Decorah Public Library between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Then the fun and learning can begin!
