The Decorah School Board voted unanimously to approve the initiation of bidding for the softball complex improvements Monday night. The project, submitted by Emergent Architecture at a cost of approximately $300,000, will include new bleachers with more seating, handicap accessibility ramps, and center walking aisles; accessible restrooms with heat, an indoor batting cage, and an updated concessions area.
School Board President Ron Fadness said, "I feel this is a very important project for us to pursue even in the current climate. It is much to our long-term benefit to have the baseball and softball fields more comparable."
Decorah High School Athletic Director Adam Riley commented he's heard from many community members about this topic, saying "A number of parents have pulled me aside to say that they're hopeful the project gets approved and gets the okay to continue."
Director of Business Services Cathy Dietzenbach presented information about the district's funds, including PPEL and SAVE numbers, that assure the district can do the softball complex improvements and still remain financially healthy.
Superintendent Mark Lane echoed Dietzenbach and the numbers, adding, "We can move forward with the softball project and not impact other potential big ticket items, such as the bus garage or a decision about the elementary school."
A public hearing is set for next month's board meeting on August 10th starting at 6:00 p.m. It will be determined at a later date if this meeting will be held in person or via Zoom.
