Ask The Answer Person: When did COVID-19 social distancing start in Iowa?

Joel e-mails: "I'm not yet scratching tally marks on the walls to count the days of lockdown/social distancing/whatever you call this new normal, though it seems like it might come to that soon. For those of us that haven't kept track, when was school called off? That seems like the best date to mark the start of this, at least as it impacts us locally."

The Answer Person says: "I understand how these past four months have turned into a blur to everyone!  What day of the week is it today?

Your suggestion that the COVID-19 response began when Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced she was closing all schools in the state seems a good marking place.  By that standard, the announcement was made Sunday, March 15th and became effective the next day, Monday, March 16th.  Happy four-month anniversary later this week!"
