Just before the start of Monday night's Decorah City Council meeting, city officials made an unpleasant discovery — the Zoom address which had been posted to allow the public to watch the city council meeting was the incorrect address.
City Attorney John Anderson counseled city officials that this could be a problem. "A Zoom address is like a street address," he told the crowd at City Hall, saying he'd recommend a "cautious approach" to actions taken Monday night, suggesting anything approved — especially anything approved following a public hearing — should be voted on again at a future meeting.
"I can't say for certain what a judge would say," Anderson told the city council members.
After a discussion, the city council meeting proceeded as scheduled. 23 people were able to find the new Zoom address and watch the meeting virtually.
The Decorah City Council will meet again July 20th with a possible report on how Zoom meetings fit into Iowa's Open Meetings Law.
