This year's garlic mustard campaign in Decorah is wrapping up

Friends of Decorah Parks has concluded another season of keeping garlic mustard under control in the Decorah park system's 300 acres of woods.

45 volunteers worked a total of more than 300 hours eradicating garlic mustard this year.  Members of the Decorah Unitarian Universalist congregation and 11 other individuals worked in areas they "adopted."

Program coordinator Mary Lewis says, "People in many areas of the US have given up on garlic mustard and say it cannot be controlled, but thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, there has been no giving up in Decorah.  However, this is not sustainable unless we recruit more volunteers.  We will eventually need to replace the people who put in extraordinarily many hours."
